Shilajit - Benefits of Shilajit and Should I try it?

Shilajit, TCM, wellness, superfoods, immune support, blog

Shialjit is becoming more popular (again). It has been "popular" in Ayurveda for thousands of years, and now we are finally rediscovering many powerful traditional tools like Shialjit. Awesome.

But What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a thick resin-like substance that is a potent source of highly bioavailable compounds.

One way to think of it is all the minerals and goodness of a forest in a highly bioavailable form.

Fulvic Acid (more on this below) is one of the key reasons people drink Shilajit. Drink it? Yep, dissolve a pea size amount (around 0.3g) in hot water, chaga, coffee, or even in a mushroom blend.

This is a lovely little definition from the International Journal of Alzheimer's Disease "Shilajit is a natural substance found mainly in the Himalayas, formed for centuries by the gradual decomposition of certain plants by the action of microorganisms. It is a potent and very safe dietary supplement, restoring the energetic balance and potentially able to prevent several diseases."

How does Shilajit taste?

Shilajit has an intense, and that's a good thing. Astringent, perhaps bitter, it tastes like nothing you've ever tasted before.

A Shilajit latte with some maple syrup or coconut sugar might be your way to really enjoy this powerful gift from nature. That said, I love chewing on a little to allow my senses to really understand it. Taste is of course a form of information or communication.

Why drink Shilajit and its benefits...

Fulvic Acid Richness: Shilajit is abundant in fulvic acid, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound, which may enhance energy levels and cognitive function. Even more the benefits of Shilajit because of its fulvic acid content below.

Immune Support: It may strengthen the immune system, aiding in overall health and resilience against infections.

Heart Health: Shilajit has shown potential in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, supporting cardiovascular health.

Sexual Energy/Wellness: Traditionally used as an aphrodisiac, Shilajit may improve sexual performance and libido in both men and women. More on this below...

Stress Relief: With adaptogenic properties, Shilajit helps the body adapt to stress and maintain balance, promoting relaxation.

Bone Strength: Essential minerals in Shilajit like calcium and magnesium contribute to bone health, potentially preventing conditions like osteoporosis.

How long does Shilajit take to work?

I personally notice higher and more stable energy levels after a few days of drinking it. The studies are normally on weeks of consecutive use. Like any functional herb or tea, it's good to try it for a while then take time off too. I tend to drink through a full 50g jar over a few months (it lasts a LONG time) then come back to it after a few weeks break.

Shilajit and Ayurveda

Shilajit's journey into the heart of Ayurveda spans millennia, with its origins rooted in ancient texts like the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, believed to have emerged between 1000 BCE and 500 CE. These highly respected scriptures paint a vivid picture of Shilajit's remarkable rejuvenating powers, praising its ability to enhance vitality, promote longevity, and nurture overall well-being.

As a cherished ingredient in traditional Indian medicine for centuries, Shilajit embodies Ayurveda's timeless wisdom, inviting us to embrace a holistic approach to health with a touch of ancient charm.

Fulvic Acid Richness: Shilajit's high content of fulvic acid is noteworthy for its multifaceted benefits. Fulvic acid acts as a powerful antioxidant, scavenging harmful free radicals and reducing oxidative stress in the body. By combating oxidative damage, it supports cellular health and may contribute to longevity. Additionally, fulvic acid exhibits potent anti-inflammatory properties, potentially alleviating symptoms of various inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and asthma. Its ability to modulate the immune response further underscores its role in promoting overall well-being. Moreover, fulvic acid is known to enhance nutrient absorption, facilitating the uptake of essential vitamins and minerals for optimal bodily function.

Sexual Energy Enhancement: Shilajit's reputation as an aphrodisiac stems from its ability to positively influence sexual energy. Studies suggest that Shilajit may enhance libido and sexual performance by increasing testosterone levels in men.

Testosterone plays a crucial role in regulating sexual desire and function, and supplementation with Shilajit may help address issues such as erectile dysfunction and low libido.

Furthermore, Shilajit's adaptogenic properties contribute to stress reduction, which can have a beneficial impact on sexual health. By promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, Shilajit may enhance the overall sexual experience for both men and women.

Its traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine for improving fertility further highlights its potential in supporting reproductive health. Overall, Shilajit's holistic approach to sexual wellness encompasses hormonal balance, stress management, and overall vitality, making it a valuable addition to a healthy lifestyle.
